The Birthplace of a Quizzo-lution

September 6th, 2007

Irish John passed out the Quizzo sheets like pamphlets promoting revolution in this most ancient of Philadelphia pubs. The teams readied their attentive ears, gripped their quills, errr, pens and the game began. Round one started similarly to the Revolution in that there was most definitely a massacre. No teams answered all the questions correctly and as the smoke cleared, no team had pulled away as an early leader. One team, Adrienne’s Birthday is Tomorrow and Katie’s Birthday is Monday and I Think Both of Them are Hot, referred heretofore as Birthday Babes, scored particularly low in the first round and seemed to drop like unarmed colonists before the Redcoat's guns. But this low score would create the fuel the team needed to further their cause toward possible victory, unless The Peggles, who have moneyed 7 of the last 8 Quizzo games, would be able to persevere; only time would tell.

The second round was the games softball pitch. The questions were as easy to hit as British soldiers marching in formation. What band did “London Calling” and who was their lead singer? Who was the Russian “Mad Monk”? What year did the stock market collapse? He may as well have asked Patrick Henry whether he wanted liberty or death.

The third round, however, was like a shoeless winter in Valley Forge. The questions were hard, the teams were determined and I was noticeably drunk from pint after pint of Hop Devil, but that’s beside the point because a new team had now made its presence known. Like the French navy this third party swooped in and changed the entire dynamic of the game. The team, Rob is a Catty Queer, forced both The Peggles and The Birthday Babes to reevaluate their position, especially when it came down to one final, completely unprecedented 3 way tie breaking question about another, much later, American revolutionary.

What was the date of Bobby Kennedy’s assassination?

The bar held its collective breath as the teams hurriedly scribbled their answers. Who would remember this date of infamy? Would Sirhan Sirhan’s act be remembered to the date? Will I be able to pull another American Revolution reference out of my ass?

The Birthday Babes, consisting of Benjamin, Adrienne, Jenn, Meg, Patrick, Simon, Catherine, Daniel and Ian, who is apparently the best, guessed closest without going over. The Peggles, consisting of Kristin, BJ, Bill, Charity and Lauren came in a nail-bitingly close second place, and have something to say to the winners.

“9? That’s Whack!”

Do I smell rematch? Bar clearing brawl? Dance fight? We’ll have to see next Wednesday at 8. So until then; sharpen your trivia skills, hone your chemistry knowledge and build up a tolerance to alcohol because these teams will be back like the British army in 1812. (Sorry, had to do it.)
